Borden's Condensed Milk Plant on Washington Street, 1908
Title
Borden's Condensed Milk Plant on Washington Street, 1908
Description
In 1903, the Borden's Condensed Milk company sent a delegation which included representatives of the Chicago and North Western railway to search for a suitable site to build a factory in Woodstock. After consulting with prominent citizens, Mayor E. C. Jewett and other alderman, the company purchased 10 acres on Chemung Road (now Washington St.). The company got permission of a nearby landowner, J. J. Murphy, for drainage to go through one of his farms.
The land was located adjacent to the railroad tracks at 700 Washington St. near the current Elm Lane.
The factory was completed in 1904.
This photo was taken in 1908 according to a file at the McHenry County Historical Society.
Milk was processed here until the building burned down about 1920.
Borden's then purchased the A. J. Olson plant at E. Jackson and Madison St.
