Austin began his grocery in 1881 then moved into this new Kendall Block in 1883. He remained in the grocery business here until his death in 1916 when his son took over the business. He stands to the left of his door while his son Garry Austin holds the door handle. The gentleman with the basket of bread is Frank W. Doton who had a baker's shop on Benton street. One of the other two men is identified Wm (Billy) Oliver or Woliver on the back of the photo. In 1885, Austin installed a new awning. Train cars are stopped on the tracks crossing Church Street. Looking north along Main Street, C. Beardsley and Son Livery sign is visible. There is a good view of the pre-1912 railroad depot. The telephone pole shows that the photo was taken after 1883. Title A name given to the resource Bandstand and North side of Square ca. 1909 Description An account of the resource This bandstand, built in 1909, replaced the earlier wood frame platform that had been built in 1885/86 at the time the Spring City Band formed. It is built on a raised concrete platform with field rock foundation and pillars. This is not the current bandstand but the pillars at the entrances to the park are still the same style with the field stone. The bandstand has electric lights on the edge of the roof and criss crossing the ceiling. The photo was taken before 1912 when globe type light fixtures were on metal poles on the edges of the park. Buildings on Cass street and Main street are visible. 106 Cass: D. Moan Board of Trade. The Board of Trade was started by Gustav Behrens in 1900 and the 1912 Sanborn map shows that it was still a saloon. So far, no information is available on D. He was connected with the late Dr. Kendall, and afterwards with Dr. Colby, from 1893 to 1895, and now occupies the same dental parlors originally owned by his Preceptors, and is a thorough dentist in everything pertaining to the profession of dental surgery. The doctor was born in Chicago in 1875, operated under Dr. Kendall and Dr. Colby for a number of years, attended the Northwestern University, and is a graduate of the dental department, class of '97. He was interested in the practice of his profession at West McHenry after his graduation, before coming to Woodstock. His parlors are nicely arranged, conveniently located and all work is guaranteed. It was used in 1992 by Columbia Pictures to house movie extras. Jim took this photo when only the B remained. The windows have already been cut into the brick façade. At the time of filming, this façade along with the modern stone façade of the buildings on both sides, were deemed inauthentic by the artistic director and were never filmed in the movie. Title A name given to the resource Calhoun Street Back of City Hall 1937 Description An account of the resource Two-story brick building behind the Opera House (City Hall) with no signage, no windows, and with double doors that might have been used for a stable or storage. Portions of other frame buildings between Calhoun and the Square can be seen. They were demolished to provide room for the A & P Grocery Store (128 Cass), probably in 1937. A small portion of the adjacent building is visible that is a more typical business building. Notes from Gene Limbaugh 2018: The building on the left was behind the Woodstock Tent & Awning Co. which faced Van Buren St. on the Square. That the building was used by them or by others is unknown. Eventualy in the 1940s everything was torn down from the C. W. Hill bldg. to Johnson St. and from Van Buren to Calhoun streets to make way for the A & P food store. 1915: G. W. Frame & E. L. Hanaford organized while still in the old Mill Bldg (pickle factory) at E. Jackson & Calhoun. 1917: They purchased the interest of the Riecke Bros. in the Home Oil Co. 1919: Moved the Oil co. business to the C.W. Hill bldg (shown to the right in picture) on Calhoun St. next to the rear of the city hall. 1921: Moved the oil business again to the new location at Throop & Judd St. 1928: Frame bought out Hanaford's interest in Home Oil Co. A woman left her car running while she went to make a deposit at the State Bank (101 S. Benton). When she returned to the car, she heard it drop into gear. It jumped the curb and demolished a parking meter before crashing into the window. The driver was cited by the police for leaving a vehicle running while unoccupied. This store over the many years built up an enviable record in the dispensing of Drugs and Medicines, filling of Prescriptions and in the sale of those articles for personal use ordinarily sold in a Drug Store. It was in this store, then conducted by Mr. L. T. Hoy and under the management of Mr. Frank A. Daniels, that Raymond P. Pfeiffer, in 1911, began his apprenticeship as a Pharmacist. During the years 1913 and 1914 he attended the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy, after which he returned to the Hoy Drug Store to continue his employment. In 1919 Mr. Pfeiffer bought a half interest in the store, which was then known as The Hoy Pharmacy and in 1928 he acquired ownership of the store by the purchase from Mr. Hoy of the remaining half of this business, with its splendid record of service and since that time the store has been known as the Pfeiffer Pharmacy. This store has continued to go forward with a vision of continued and increased service to the people of this community. Title A name given to the resource Cass Street from Courthouse Roof 1902-04 Description An account of the resource This view from the Courthouse roof shows much of Cass Street and part of Main Street. There are two frame buildingson the square. The one on the far left was a boarding house that was torn down in 1928, along with the Diesel & Reichmuth Furniture and Undertaking building next to it, to make room for the F. W. Woolworth store. The one at the intersection of Cass & Main shows a gabled roof, rather than the storefront façade (which shows up in the 1905 Sanborn map). The most easily identifiable buildings in the background are the Buell & Olmstead Flour and Grain building (upper far left), the fancy design of the Waverly House Hotel at 212 Main street, and the Dacy Lumber storage building that was originally the first church on Jefferson st. 124 Cass: Diesel & Reichmuth Furniture and Undertaking. Rudolph Diesel came from Germany in 1848, locating in Watertown NY for several years, then moving to southern Kentucky, before moving to Woodstock in 1860 where he conducted a business selling and manufacturing furniture and coffins, and providing undertaking services at 122 Cass for many years. The store’s large awning advertising furniture and undertaking appears in many old Woodstock photos. Diesel advertised that he also sold sewing machines. In 1928, the Diesel building was demolished, along with the old clapboard sided boarding house with the white picket fence located to the west, to build a new F.W. Woolworth Company store. During the excavation, the skeleton of a baby was reported discovered, but the mystery remained unsolved. The F. W. Woolworth store was constructed by local building contractor Henry Ohlrich. The building had an ornamental terra cotta façade and the trademark F.W. Woolworth Co. gold lettering. The western third of building was occupied by the A& P Tea Co. in 1930’s and by True Value Hardware in the 1940’s and early 50’s. The terra cotta was removed and replaced with brick in the 1970’s. 120 Cass: A. B. Pratt constructed the Pratt Meat Market building in 1899 on the site of the old McManus building. The front section of the McManus building had been moved down the hill from in front of 130 Cass Street when Cass Street was extended through to Throop Street. At the time of demolition, it was known as the A.B. Pratt & Son Meat Market. Prior to that it had been run as the Bradley and Bradley Meat Market and the Cash Meat Market. In the early 1920’s, John Asmus and his son Charlie were full time butchers for Reid Pratt. City directories list the building as the Asmus Meat Market in the 1930’s and 40’s (the Asmus Market later moved to 126 N. Benton) and the R.W. Schultz Meat Market in the 1950’s.[Nancy Baker] 118 Cass became the First Savings and Loan Association of Woodstock in the early 1960’s. The façade of 118 and 120 Cass were altered as the savings and loan expanded.
