The village of McHenry, now on the eastern border of the of the newly formed McHenry County, remained the county seat until September of 1843 when an election was held to select a more centrally located spot. Several locations were on the ballot including Centerville which was unsettled land located near the geographic center of the new McHenry County. Centerville existed only on paper, having been laid out by Alvin Judd and officially recorded by George Dean.

The election was held and Centerville was selected as the new county seat. A small two-story wooden courthouse was built in the Woodstock Square Park and in September of 1844 all county records and county offices were moved to Centerville from McHenry.

Soon after, March of 1845, Centerville’s name was changed to Woodstock, named after Woodstock, Vermont, birthplace of the McHenry County Clerk at the time, Joel Johnson.

The names of the streets on the original Centerville plat were most likely chosen to curry favor with the County Commissioners at the time; H.B. Throop, B.H. Tryon and Andrew J. Hayward and also Superintendent of Schools, Peter Dietz. The other streets were named after prominent and popular Democrat politicians at the time (McHenry County was solidly Democratic until 1856) Andrew Jackson, John C. Calhoun, Lewis Cass, Thomas Hart Benton, Martin Van Buren, John Wentworth. Johnson street could have been named after either Joel Johnson, County Clerk, or possibly Richard Mentor Johnson.

G. Eckert, under the firm name of Schneider & Eckert, conduct tonsorial parlors in the Furer building, east side public square. Mr. Schneider has been in the business in this city for more than twenty-five years, being for several years located on the corner where B. S. Austin's store now is. Mr. Eckert learned his trade in Mr. Schneider's shop, and that gentleman took him into partnership several years ago. Roy Murphy is a learner in their shop. [Woodstock Sentinel 12-19-1901]
Schneider & Eckert were still in business in the 1914 City Directory, so it is possible that they are in this photo.
It is also possible that the Harness Maker was Frank Hanaford. He is listed in the 1914 City Directory and was listed in the 1901 Sentinel article:

]]> Learning the trade of stone mason and plasterer, he moved to Woodstock where he enjoyed a very successful trade. He attempted different architectural styles with his brick: Italianate at 517 and Greek Revival at 522. The brick pattern of decoration on 517 is called corbeling and is said to be a Burbank trademark. He built the Jacob Harder House 123 S. Hayward and also assisted in building the Presbyterian church at 215 S. Tryon. He died in 1885 at age 80 in Dallas, TX, where he was visiting his daughter, and was buried in Woodstock. Jennette Burbank, a direct descendent, lived in the house until 1982.

The photographer, Melvin G. Tripp was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Tripp. He was a capable and successful photographer for many years. Lived a quiet and retired life. May 20, 1904 Free Methodist Church formally open "Old Folks Rest Home" on 15 acres, formerly the James Allen farm, near the Chicago Industrial Home for Children [Woodstock Republican]

THE OLD PEOPLE'S REST HOME "Come in," softly came the voice, as we paused in a door-way. Helpless, bed-fast, suffering, her face looked, with its frame of soft white hair and her blue eyes, so sei-enely happy. "I have just been thanking my heavenly father for allowing me to spend my last days here." Our visitor was following the matron as she made her rounds. "Most of our guests have accumulated a little and invested it in a small home where they expected to spend their last days. But that was lonely, and there was much they could not do for themselves, so they have turned over their home to us, and we are helping them to enjoy what time they have left." This Institution opened its doors for the care of tho aged in 1903. One of the founders who later became its superintendent and chief promoter was the late Rev. J. D. Kelsey. At first it was only possible to accommodate about ten guests, but was later remodeled to entertain fourteen. On the demise of Rev. Kelsey, Rev. C. E. Maxwell became the superintendent, and it was during his term of service that it was brought to its present standard, and enlarged to accommodate eighteen. During all these years the home has been filled to capacity, with many applicants on the waiting list. The purpose of the founders was to provide a comfortable, pleasant home for those who had no convenient place to live, yet had some means they could contribute, which when pooled with others would be ample to provide for them the rest of their life. A survey of the roster shows many names that some of our readers would remember. For during the history of the institution of the 97 who have found this home as a "Haven of Rest" during their last days, nearly 20 percent have been from Woodstock and nearby towns. At the present time one-fourth of the guests are from McHenry county. The Home opens its doors to any desiring a quiet, comfortable cheerful place to live. At present there is an aged minister, a physician, the widow of a Civil War Veteran, the widow of a minister, a nurse and others who have contributed their part in the communities from which they came. Statistics show that those who have come to the home have lived eight to twelve years longer than they had any prospect of living when they came. The home family is in charge of a registered nurse and three assistants. They are always pleased to have friends call and make the acquaintance of the guests. The present superintendent is Rev. N. W. None of the Square photos have brick on the street, so they were taken before 1912. The depot was built in 1912.
The Congress Dairy photo was dated 1912 in a Northwest Herald interview of Joan Mansfield, council woman and local history expert.

Few of the buildings in this picture remain on the north side of Washington St. witht exception of the large white building at the intersection with Wheeler St. It was a funeral home and is now a dentist's office. Also remaining is the apartment building at the far eastern end.

All of the Woodstock Die Casting (Eltra, Autolite etc.) buildings have been demolished.

The original Clay Street School building is visible behind the current school. El Niagra (120 First St.) looks just about the same except in 1950 it was Tony's Lunchroom and Skow Grocery.

Kristensen's Service Station was at 135 Washington (now belongs to St Mary Parish). According to the 1950 City Directory, the Dairy Queen is already there, so this photo may pre-date 1950. Notable buildings now demolished include the First Baptist Church at the intersection of Throop and W. Jackson, houses and gas stations along Throop street, houses on W. Jackson and Tryon where BMO Harris bank and parking lots are now, houses on Dean Street between the Opera House and South Street where the city hall parking lot is now located. Also the Odd Fellows building on W. Jackson was torn down for the bank expansion.
City Hall/Central School at 121 W. Calhoun was being used as the McHenry County Courthouse Annex. The building did not have the fire house addition but had a larger parking lot.
The movie theater was smaller with a narrow store building and the Main Street parking lot, now covered by Woodstock Classic Cinemas.

The photo is taken from a distance showing a cloud of dust in the road with men standing at the edge watching the car go past. Most of the spectators are further away from the photographer, indicating what might be the finish line.

The steep hill provided a challenge to early automobiles and this hill is one of the few in McHenry County. It was a popular pastime during that era. German peace envoys enter Allies’ line under white flag

At the time of going: to press (6 o’clock) it was still impossible to positively verify the report of Germany's capitulation. Reliable sources of information only say, “Nothing official.’’
According to reports received from various sources this afternoon the great world war came to an end today. At noon German armistice envoys had entered the French lines under a flag of truce and had accepted all of the terms laid down by Marshal Foch, the chief representative of the Allies. The four German delegates, two representing the army and two the navy, crossed the German border, passing along a road designated by Marshal Foch in wireless instructions to the German command.
Information as to the details of this most happy ending of the stupendous conflict which has rocked the world for four years past has been slow in coming through. In fact, the authenticity of the entire report has been difficult to establish.
The wires were burning up with the glad tidings that Germany had accepted terms of the Allies for an armistice, shortly after noon today. Although the messages seemed to come from a good source, people shook their heads in doubt, seemingly afraid that there was some mistake and fearing the terrible disappointment which would follow a demonstration or celebration of the big event which the whole world has hoped for, prayed for and a large proportion has fought for.
After waiting a few minutes for more news their enthusiasm became boundless and as the time flew by, work ceased in the shops, the whistles were turned loose and the members of the hand ran for their instruments. The crowds kept gaining in number until the streets of Woodstock looked like State street in Chicago on an exceptionally busy day.
Noise of every available kind could be heard, men, women and children yelling with all their might. Parades were organized and everyone seemed to have found an American flag somewhere.
The pupils in the schools soon became unmanageable and were told to put away their books and join in the celebration.
The Sentinel was just making everything ready to go to press when the news came in, the forms were remodeled and not desiring to hold up the joyful report from the public longer than to be sure of its authenticity, we are giving but a brief account of the doings in old Woodstock on this glorious gala day.


WOODSTOCK CELEBRATES

(Continued from Page 1) Phone bells began to jingle and the glad tidings were spread that the armistice had been signed.
Quickly donning street clothes, not even stopping to think of breakfast, they made their way to the down­town district to join in celebrating the great dawn of peace. Grabbing anything that would make a noise, they started the grand march through the streets of the city. Like the pro­verbial snowball, every move meant an addition to the ranks and by the time daylight broke through the east­ern horizon a small army was gather­ed together.
The Weldon band was soon on the job to assist and at a few minutes past 7 o’clock on that never to be for­gotten morning of the 11th of Novem­ber, 1918. Woodstock was witnessing and joining in the celebration of the birth of a real world democracy. This building was built in 1912 after a previous armory on Calhoun between Dean & Jefferson was destroyed by fire in 1910. Used by Woodstock Company G, of the 3rd Illinois Regiment during World Wars I and II. When not being used as an armory it was used for "mercantile purposes," dances, and even roller skating. It was replaced by the Armory on 1301 Sunset Ridge Rd near Route 14 in 1991. It was turned into condos in 2003.
