<dcterms:description>Sanborn maps from 1885 to 1912 show two businesses in the building at 110 N. Benton, a barber shop and a harness shop. There was also a third business in the basement. Sometime between 1900 and 1902, Bernie Sherman moved his "Sherman's Sporting Resort," from the Primm Block to this location (the Furer Block). He sold sporting goods, guns, ammunition, bicycles, lawn mowers, cigars and tobacco. Plus he offered billiards and bowling--all in the basement. The first time cigars and tobacco are mentioned in his ad was in 1905.
"Henry Schneider and M. G. Eckert, under the firm name of Schneider & Eckert, conduct tonsorial parlors in the Furer building, east side public square. Mr. Schneider has been in the business in this city for more than twenty-five years, being for several years located on the corner where B. S. Austin's store now is. Mr. Eckert learned his trade in Mr. Schneider's shop, and that gentleman took him into partnership several years ago. Roy Murphy is a learner in their shop. [Woodstock Sentinel 12-19-1901]
Schneider & Eckert were still in business in the 1914 City Directory, so it is possible that they are in this photo.
It is also possible that the Harness Maker was Frank Hanaford. He is listed in the 1914 City Directory and was listed in the 1901 Sentinel article:
DRAYMEN. The draymen of the city are E. L. Hanaford, Frank C. Hanaford (who also handles the American express) [Woodstock Sentinel 12-19-1901]</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>1930 Todd School class photo with Grace Hall in the background. A young Orson Welles (age 14 or 15) is in the middle of the back row (standing in front of the tree). Roger "Skipper" Hill, headmaster, is fifth from the right in the back row.

The Todd School for Boys (1848–1954) was an independent school located in Woodstock, Illinois founded by Reverend Richard Kimball Todd, a Presbyterian pastor. Under the guidance of Headmaster Noble Hill in the 1920s and Hill’s son Roger in the 1930s, it became known as a progressive school that provided students, including Orson Welles, with a creative educational environment that emphasized practical experience over traditional academics. The main Todd School Campus was located on the northeast corner of the Rt. 47 and Rt. 120 junction.

The famous actor and director, Orson Welles, is the best-known Todd School graduate. He started at Todd School in 1926 and graduated in 1931 at age 15. In the summer of 1934, he returned to produce the Todd Theatre Festival of Shakespearean plays at the Opera House.

Welles’ first known film, Hearts of Age, was filmed in Woodstock. The building seen in the film is Wallingford Hall on the school campus. The Todd School bell used in the film now resides in front of the Woodstock Presbyterian Church, and the gravestone is in the Calvary Cemetery on Jackson Street.

Welles is perhaps best known for directing and starring in Citizen Kane. In another of his movies, The Stranger, set in a boys’ boarding school, Welles paid homage by including subtle references to Todd School.

Welles was a frequent visitor to the school after graduating, and would eventually serve on the Todd School board and his daughter, Christopher, attended the school. Welles remained friends with Roger Hill, Todd School Headmaster, and the two men collaborated on the Everybody’s Shakespeare.
<dcterms:title>401 W. Jackson Always Inn Postcard</dcterms:title>
<dcterms:description>This postcard, published circa 1910, shows the Cyrus Durfee House, 401 W. Jackson, during the years it was a hotel. Cyrus Durfee built his "mansion" in 1867. The Woodstock Sentinel extolled it as "One of the largest, most convenient, and best arranged residences in the county...lately furnished and occupied. It is located on the south side of Jackson street, on as fine a building spot as the town affords. The main building is thirty-six feet square and two stories high. On the south side is a wing, eighteen by thirty-six feet, also two-stories high, adjoining which is a wood house, eighteen by twenty-four feet. The cellar under the main building contains a cistern, ice room and a large refrigerator. In the building are fifteen rooms, exclusive of closets, all large and well lighted. On the first floor is a bath room, fitted up in the most convenient manner. Communication between the refrigerator in the cellar and the pantry above is made by means of a dumb waiter. Forty feet above ground, on the building, is an observatory, which gives a fine view of the town and surroundings. ...The plans and design were furnished by Mr. Van Osdell, architect, of Chicago...The cost of the building is not less than $7,000."

Cyrus Durfee was a physician who practiced in Woodstock until 1874, then his name appears in the Chicago business directories until his death in 1901.

The house became the Always Inn sometime between 1903, When Thomas and Gertrude Shackell were married, and when this postcard was printed. The hotel was first known as Always Inn, but the name was listed as Hotel Hillcrest in the 1914 city directory. The Shackell’s ran the hotel until their deaths in 1950. He died on February 28 and she died March 13. It was still a hotel in 1960 (called The Crest), but was vacant for most of the 1960s. The house was divided into apartments around 1968.
Dexter and Mable Herrington moved there sometime between the 1900 US Census, when they lived in Hebron, and the 1910 US Census. The listing includes their four children, sister-in-law Shirley, and their boarder Edward Joslyn. Both men were listed as a "mounter" at the Oliver Typewriter factory. Mable was included in a Society Page story in the Woodstock Sentinel, February 10, 1910, as the President of the "Mother's Circle." This organization met every two weeks in the City Council Chambers and was a social and educational club similar to the Seneca Ladies Literary Society. Before 1920, the family moved to Los Angeles where he was a gardener for a high school in San Pedro and she appears again in the society pages as an active member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>This postcard is identified on the back as the Irene Dietz home on W. Judd Street. It is part of a collection of Irene and Betty Dietz Hayes items donated by a relative.

The US census and Woodstock City Directories list Dietz at 456 W. Judd in the 1930s and 1940s. The address is listed in the 1948 directory but not in the 1950 directory so the house was probably demolished at that time. Today a long driveway leads to the back of the property that has new small apartments that are difficult to see from Judd St.
