Several are walking south between the Chicago and Northwestwern railroad tracks ignoring the large Watch Out For Cars sign. Some of the men have crossed at Church street possibly to join the large group waiting to go to Harvard on the next train. Some have stayed on the east side platform to ride the train to Crystal Lake. There are tracks coming down from the Oliver factory and tracks that cross them from either the lumber company or the Woodstock Typewriter factory.

On the left side of the photo the backs of buildings that front on East Judd street and North Benton street are visible. The depot was replaced in 1912 with the one still used today.

The photographer is unknown. The handwriting on the negative does not match any known local photographer.

The postcard photo is dark and was probably printed before 1907 since there is room left on the front for messages. This postcard was dated 1908 and was sent to Howard Stone in Norway.

This is to highlight the new addition that was completed in 1906. The trees must have been protected during construction since they obsure the view of most of the front details.

The photo does not take up the full front side of the postcard but leaves some space for a message. This reinforces the 1906 date since postal regulations changed in 1907, allowing messages on the back along with the address. This card was printed in 1907 or later, because it does have room for a message on the back.</text>

                <text>Veterans and Public observe Memorial Day May 31, 1911 [Sentinel June 1, 1911 p1]
partial:
After the services, the lines formed in front of the Opera House under the direction of Captain Eckert as follows:
Oliver Typewriter Band.
Company G.
Grand Army of the Republic
Boy Scouts.
Flower Girls.
Women’s Relief Corps
The march was made around the park west, back to the west gate, and to the soldier’s monument where the Woman’s Relief Corps gave its beautiful service in honor of the unknown dead. The graves of the old soldiers were decorated Tuesday morning by a committee of old soldiers, assisted by young ladies from the high school. There were more graves to decorate this year all over our county, and fewer soldiers to join in the Memorial Day services.
Owing to the fact that this was the fiftieth anniversary break of the Civil war, it was felt throughout and more people joined the day than usual. Most of the business places and private residences throughout the city were decorated with flags, and the weather man treated us kindly, giving us fair weather, which added much to the success of the day. During the afternoon from 2 to 4 o'clock, most of the business houses were closed.</text>

The detail of the metal fountain in the middle dates it before 1909 and the postcard itself has both address & message on the back, legal only after 1907. The condition of the card has obliterated the end of the artist's name: Drawn by T. Ma….
It is postmarked 1910.
