Title
March 22 1855 | Crystal Lake Officials Set Sights on County Seat
Description
We notice that the Chicago Democrat, Chronicle, and Advocate, and Belvidere Standard and Democratic Press, are announcing that the citizens of Crystal Lake are a going to raise fifteen thousand dollars, for building the courthouse in the event of a removal. Tell the whole story, gentlemen. T. A. Stewart of the Chicago Tribune, better known as the "Lying Tribune," who bought some land at Crystal Lake, last summer on time, is going to give ten thousand dollars toward the buildings, and one thousand dollars for a big oyster supper, and then the few citizens of Crystal Lake, who are in favor of removal, will raise the other fifteen thousand dollars. The people are getting anxious about seeing Stewart's thousand dollars. It is generally supposed that Stewart and the Trustees of the Crystal Lake academy will open an office at the new County Seat, next winter, to refund the people of this County, the taxes which through their instrumentality have been levied by the Legislature for the purpose of putting up those buildings. We hope that when Stewart spends the odd thousand for the et ceteras that the Chicago Democrat will be invited and that Deacon Bross will be called upon to repond to the first regular Toast, "We have stolen, and are yet alive."
