Title

May 25 1853 | County Board of Supervisors meet at Courthouse

Description

The Board of Supervisors met at the Court House, on Friday last, according to a call from the clerk. They were a very intelligent looking body of men , and would do no discredit to any County in the State. John Sibley esq. of Virginia, was chosen Chairman, our old friend Judge Reynolds, of McHenry who has so ably presided over the Board for the last two or three years, having declined a re-election. A considerable amount of business was disposed of, some of it of a very important character. A large number of Poor bills were allowed, and many other accounts against the County. The Board also refused to grant Licenses for the sale of intoxicating liquors. Some little discussion ensued on this subject Messrs. Cogswell Nixon, and Mr. Willard, who addressed the Board, as he said, by request of some of its members, but the argument evidently appeared to be all on one side, and against granting Licenses. We hope the steps that the Board have taken may prove effectual in remeding the widespread evils arrising from the frequent induglence in ardent spirits. The law has done its duty, public opinion must do the rest. Mr. H. T. Rice, of Hartland, introduced a resolution, authorizing the Board to appoint a Committee for the purpose of inquiring into the expediency of taking some steps towards procuring suitable grounds for the erection of a new Court House and Jail, with County Offices & Co. which after some discussion, was adopted. The Committee are to report to the Board at its annual meeting, in November. Mr. Rice made some very pertinent remarks on introducing the resolution, in relation to the actual necessity which existed for more commodations and suitable buildings for the accomodation of our Courts, which were responded to by Esquire Judd and others. We hope some effected steps will be taken by the Board at its annual meeting, for the purpose of carrying Mr. Rice's resolution into practical operation. The wants of the County certainly demand more suitable accomodations that those at present it enjoys. In our next paper we shall publish the official proceedings of the Board.
