Title

Medlar Studio Photographers

Description

His photos are the oldest in the library's collection. According to Woodstock Illustrated, published in 1895, J.S. Medlar was the first photographer in McHenry County and one of the first in the state. He was still working at that time, but in the 1897 publication Headlight: Sights and Scenes Along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, his son Herbert had taken over the management of the studio.

Herbert moved the studio to Dean Street, just south of the Opera House. He continued to operate the studio until his death in 1937, at which time his wife Ruth and daughter Modelle took over. Modelle was only 17 at the time. When she was 22, she met her future husband, Robert McCoy, who was a lieutenant in the Army stationed at a munitions plant in Huntley. They were married August 16, 1944. He left two weeks later for Germany, returning in April 1946. Robert joined Modelle at Medlar Studios until it closed in 1961.
