Wall of Honor WWII 1943

Description

A wooden sign surrounding the Civil War Monument (also known as the Soldier's Monument) listed the names of men and women serving in the armed forces from Woodstock. In 1944, approximately 1200 names were listed on the "Honor Roll" including 18 designated with a gold star indicating that they had died in the conflict. A year later, in March of 1945, the Sentinel reported that there were 1420 names on the honor roll and 45 gold stars. Five months later in August of 1945 it was reported there were 1454 names on the honor roll with 52 gold stars. The honor roll remained in the square park until May of 1948.

The date of the photo is handwritten on the back.

The bandstand has no roof. It has round globe lights atop each stone pillar. The stone cannon holders have no cannon. Montgomery Wards, the Courthouse and the Sheriff's house are visible.
