Title

Square park in winter after 1891

Description

Square park after a snowfall showing the Woodstock Opera House (built 1889) and two other buildings on W. Van Buren St. Three buildings also are visible on S. Johnson, including the Donnelly buildings. The center of the square has a wood fence around the fountain location in the center (the fountain was removed each winter). The sidewalks have been cleared to show the diagonal paths. Horses and drays are pulled up to the Cass street edge of the park. There is a single rope or chain between the fence posts (unlike earlier versions that had two rails or board). This is identified as a Tripp photo by the style of the cardboard edge that matches the photo clearly identified by Tripp. Also it is taken in front of his office on Cass St.

The fountain was built ca 1881. The 1956 Woodstock Sentinel special edition had it on their 1881-1882 page with the caption "New fountain is admired by scores of people everyday."
