Title

Square park entrance Grant Memorial

Description

This photo was taken from the Main Street entrance to the Square Park. In the far background, there is empty space where the Opera House will be built 4 years later. A rectangular archway shows a large photo of President Ulysses S. Grant with a sign above reading "The Nation's Loss!"
Small boys pose beneath the sign. James Brink is the small boy on the fence in knee breeches and Alec Darryl is standing in front with knee breeches.
The fountain in the center of the square is visible and behind it another mourning arch was built on the opposite entrance on Dean Street.
The sidewalks are wood and show the beginnings of the diagonal walks. The fence has only one flat board between the upright posts.
