Evans Meat Market 1929
Title
Evans Meat Market 1929
Description
The interior of Evens Meat market, dated 1929 on back. The name Harold Evans is also on the back.
There are several intriguing items in the photo. There is a cash window on the right with a sign saying "Thank you call again" which indicates they shared space with some other business. The supplementary lights hang from tracks not unlike current track lighting.
Harold graduated from Woodstock High School in 1923. For this reason, it seems likely that the young man on the left is Harold Evans. The other man is presumably his father Mathias Evans who listed his occupation as butcher in the 1910 through 1940 U. S. census records. Harold listed the same occupation in these censuses. Mathias' wife and Harold's mother was named Anna Evans so she could be the third person but we have no proof.
Jim Keefe has a slide showing the interior of Evans Meat Market, south side of Square, that looks very much older than this one. A man and three boys pose and they seem similar to the people in this photo. Evans Meat Market is listed at 107 Van Buren in the 1914 city directory.
An ad in the 1927 listed the address as 126 Benton St.
Harold merited several mentions in the 1937 special edition of the Sentinel including being Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
