Woodstock High School Track Winning Relay Team - 1913

Title

Woodstock High School Track Winning Relay Team - 1913

Description

The 1914 Blue and White yearbook has the story:

MCHENRY COUNTY TRACK MEET held at Woodstock, May 17, 1913.

A record crowd turned out from Harvard, Marengo, Richmond, Crystal Lake, Huntley, McHenry, and Woodstock. The meet was managed by Northwestern University coaches, and everything worked out with machine-like precision. First came the sprints in which our men were at a slight disadvangage, though they held their own and bravely contested each inch. Next there were the field events in which Woodstock plainly showed superiority, and which were our chief gainers. But as the meet drew to a close, the weaker teams were sifted out and the championship was not decided until the supreme event of the day--the relay race. The decisive moment had arrived, and a hush fell on the throng of rooters as Woodstock's chosen athletes took their places. From the firing of the shot till the end of the race a big lead was kept by Woodstock, and--we won!
