Description
This large group photo of the employees at the Oliver Typewriter factory in the Assembling Department includes many women. Several newspaper articles use the expression "bench girls."
The November 2, 1911 Woodstock Sentinel article states, "The Oliver assembly bench girls celebrated Halloween…the second of a series of parties given by the bench girls."
Later, in the May 3, 1917 Sentinel, an ad read "Wanted: Assemblers, Aligners, Typewriter men and machine hands of all kinds, steady work and good wages. Good positions for girls over 16."
In the November 22, 1917 Sentinel article "Factory Girls Knit for Red Cross, 211 women employees are giving up one evening a week."
Oliver Typewriter Vice President and Superintendent John Whitworth stands at the far left just behind a young man in white sleeves in the front row.
