Keep your eye on THE FRONT WINDOW
Don’t fail to be at J. J. Stafford’s afore at 7:30 o’clock sharp Wednesday night and witness the novel fete of hypnotizing over the long distance telephone by the Great Mack of the Mack’s Hypnotic Comedy company. The Macks have a national reputation and are people of the highest moral and literary entertainers, whom to meet and to know is a real pleasure. The spectacle to be witnessed at the opera house has never been witnessed in this city before. No such artists In this line of work have ever visited this section. That the theatre will be turned into a merrymaking place as well as a school of instruction cannot again be said. All the tests and experiments, especially the comical ones, are the embodiment of entertainment. [Woodstock Sentinel Sept. 5, 1912]

C.R. Childs published the postcard, numbered G245. Charles R. Childs was a prominent Chicago photographer and post card manufacturer from about 1906 until the 1950s. He sent photographers out on the interurban trains to various towns in the Midwest to capture views that would be saleable. He specialized in "real photo" postcards.</text>

<text>The monument to Civil War soldiers was dedicated November 9, 1909. The Women's Relief Corps, founded in 1883 as an auxilliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, raised the $3,000 needed for the statue. It took the women 12 years to accumulate the funds. They gave "dime" socials and ten-cent teas, they operated an "eating house" at the fair grounds, they sponsored a ball and a lecture series. When they had collected half the amount needed, they passed the hat among the citizens of Woodstock who responded with pledges of $100 or less, depending upon their means.

Antonio Zoia got the contract for the monument, which was carved of Barre and dark Quincy marble by a firm in Vermont. Several locations were considered: in a cemetery, then in one of the four corners of the park, and finally in the center of the Square where an ornamental fountain had been previously. Zoia erected the pedestal surmounted by a soldier standing at rest.

3,000 people attended the unveiling including 800 Woodstock school children, civil war veterans and their families, and military dignitaries.

The band stand was also erected in 1909.

Wm. G. Hoffman was in business producing postcards from 1908 until 1924. There are few clues in the photo to determine the date it was taken and there is no postmark on the back. </text>

Just one small truck, one car and one horse are parked on the Square, indicating that the photo was taken before the festivities began. Winged Victory statues are on each column and an eagle over a V is in the middle. The letters are illuminated.
The "Jane Dahm" photo shows the same location later in the day with a group of boys standing in the left corner.
The third arch was located on the East Jackson entrance to the park and was much simpler with no lettering and just a cross in the middle. This was the entrance nearest to "Flander's Field."

HOUR DEVOTED TO SOLEMN SERVICE FOR DEAD HEROES
With Bared Heads Multitude Pays Respect to Men Who Will Not Come Back
MINIATURE “FLANDERS FIELD”
White Crosses Shown Among' the Red Poppies
At two o'clock all entertaining; activities and jollity ceased and the people including soldiers and civilians gathered around the southeast corner of the park, when; a memorial arch had been erected and a miniature “Flanders field” had been laid out, to pay a silent tribute to our departed heroes.
“Flanders field" was a small plot of ground covered with a mass of red poppies, together with and among which fifty-eight white crosses were arranged, each cross signifying a McHenry county soldier who had died in the service. A six-pointed gold star, representing a hero of Jewish faith stood in place of one of the white crosses. The crosses were made by Rev Kaufman, while the poppies, each a perfect flower in itself, were the handiwork of Mrs. Gracia Mosher and Miss Margaret Newcomb. These crosses and flowers represented many hours of patient work on the part of both Mr. Kaufman and the ladies.
Over the speaker’s platform, as an entrance to "Flanders field," was a large white memorial arch, on the sides of which appeared two large tablets on which the honor roll was inscribed in letters of gold. Over the top on the arch were the words “Our Departed Heroes.”
The Memorial Service
The Memorial service began by a selection "Sacred March.” by Weldon's band.
Rev. Kaufman, representing the memorial committee, made a few introductory remarks, after which the Woodstock Male quartet sang "Crossing the Bar.” A prayer was offered by Rev. Father D. J. The Spring House is boarded up for the winter. The Woodstock Opera House has the original portico and wood door for the fire department. A house is visible where the fire department addition was later erected. Central School is also visible.
In the distance, the south side "Bunker Brothers" building has no third story or cupola.
A flag in the foreground leaves a ghostly image and a flag on a pole in the park by the entrance is blowing so much it created a blotch in the middle of the square. Another flag is visible on the far side of the square--the reason for the flags is as yet unknown. They are not in the photo taken March 27, 1930.

Johnson, including the Donnelly buildings. The center of the square has a wood fence around the fountain location in the center (the fountain was removed each winter). The sidewalks have been cleared to show the diagonal paths. Horses and drays are pulled up to the Cass street edge of the park. There is a single rope or chain between the fence posts (unlike earlier versions that had two rails or board). This is identified as a Tripp photo by the style of the cardboard edge that matches the photo clearly identified by Tripp. Also it is taken in front of his office on Cass St.

The fountain was built ca 1881. The 1956 Woodstock Sentinel special edition had it on their 1881-1882 page with the caption "New fountain is admired by scores of people everyday."</text>

<text>This bandstand, built in 1909, replaced the earlier wood frame platform that had been built in 1885/86 at the time the Spring City Band formed. It is built on a raised concrete platform with field rock foundation and pillars. This is not the current bandstand but the pillars at the entrances to the park are still the same style with the field stone.
The bandstand has electric lights on the edge of the roof and criss crossing the ceiling. The photo was taken before 1912 when globe type light fixtures were on metal poles on the edges of the park.
Buildings on Cass street and Main street are visible.
106 Cass: D. Moan Board of Trade. The Board of Trade was started by Gustav Behrens in 1900 and the 1912 Sanborn map shows that it was still a saloon. So far, no information is available on D. Moan.

108 Cass: Henry Stone and Son boot and shoe store. This is the old frame building that, after escaping the fire on Main Street in 1892, burned in 1936 and was replaced by a single story tile building. The fire destroyed hundreds of photographic negatives from a succession of photographers: G. A. Burbank, M. Colton and Mel Tripp

112 Cass: B. S. Austin Grocery (see photo ID 62) and Dr. Besley, Dentist
"W. C. Besley, D. D. S. Dr. Besley has recently purchased the good will and office equipment formerly owned by Dr. E. K. Lawrence, and has renewed his social and professional connections in Woodstock. He was connected with the late Dr. Kendall, and afterwards with Dr. Colby, from 1893 to 1895, and now occupies the same dental parlors originally owned by his Preceptors, and is a thorough dentist in everything pertaining to the profession of dental surgery. The doctor was born in Chicago in 1875, operated under Dr. Kendall and Dr. Colby for a number of years, attended the Northwestern University, and is a graduate of the dental department, class of '97. He was interested in the practice of his profession at West McHenry after his graduation, before coming to Woodstock. His parlors are nicely arranged, conveniently located and all work is guaranteed. Dr. Besley makes a specialty of painless dentistry." [Headlight 1898 p. 12]
