Two versions of this postcard are included in the Jim Keefe collection. The first, and original, version is by E. C. Kropp of Milwaukee who took the photo and produced a colorized postcard. The second postcard has A.S. Wright Pub. in place of EC Kropp. It has a color wash rather than being full-color. Copyright laws were not always followed at the time, but perhaps Wright did work with Kropp rather than "pirate" the card.

When it was erected, everyone called it the Soldier's Monument. It has other names: Civil War Statue and The Sentinel due to the fact that the Woodstock Sentinel newspaper used a drawing of it as their masthead.</text>

<text>The monument to Civil War soldiers was dedicated November 9, 1909. The Women's Relief Corps, founded in 1883 as an auxilliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, raised the $3,000 needed for the statue. It took the women 12 years to accumulate the funds. They gave "dime" socials and ten-cent teas, they operated an "eating house" at the fair grounds, they sponsored a ball and a lecture series. When they had collected half the amount needed, they passed the hat among the citizens of Woodstock who responded with pledges of $100 or less, depending upon their means.

Antonio Zoia got the contract for the monument, which was carved of Barre and dark Quincy marble by a firm in Vermont. Several locations were considered: in a cemetery, then in one of the four corners of the park, and finally in the center of the Square where an ornamental fountain had been previously. Zoia erected the pedestal surmounted by a soldier standing at rest.

3,000 people attended the unveiling including 800 Woodstock school children, civil war veterans and their families, and military dignitaries.

The band stand was also erected in 1909.

Wm. G. Hoffman was in business producing postcards from 1908 until 1924. There are few clues in the photo to determine the date it was taken and there is no postmark on the back. </text>

<text>This series of photos is called "Looking for the Time Capsule." Jim Clegg was responsible for a project that listed the names of all the Civil War soldiers that lost their lives in that war. Before the names were installed around the base of the Civil War Soldier Monument in the Square a group of history buffs tried to locate the time capsule that had reputedly been put under the statue when it was installed in 1909. This series of photos (six photos are scanned with an additional six not scanned but stored behind these photos in the sleeves) document the search. In the first photo, the wooden frame has already been erected around the base of the statue for support and to outline the area where the granite stones with the names will be placed. In the second photo, Jim Clegg is facing the camera. In the third photo, three men examine the area under the statue, including Tony Zoia on the right. The fourth photo shows the bystanders: unknown, Al Wilson, city engineer, Eileen Millard, Woodstock Independent reporter, Jim Clegg's back, Tim Clifton, city manager, and an unknown newspaper photographer. The last photo shows the empty indentation where the time capsule (probably?) had been located but there is no way to really know.</text>

The Spring House is boarded up for the winter. The Woodstock Opera House has the original portico and wood door for the fire department. A house is visible where the fire department addition was later erected. Central School is also visible.
In the distance, the south side "Bunker Brothers" building has no third story or cupola.
A flag in the foreground leaves a ghostly image and a flag on a pole in the park by the entrance is blowing so much it created a blotch in the middle of the square. Another flag is visible on the far side of the square--the reason for the flags is as yet unknown. They are not in the photo taken March 27, 1930.

<text>In this series of eight photos, Jim Clegg, Jim Zoia and several newspaper reporters and photographers supervise the installation of the names of the Civil War soldiers who lost their lives during the war. Jim Clegg was the person who started the project, gained permission from the city, and raised the funds almost single-handed. The Jim Keefe's Photos (original photos) notebook includes the documentation of the history of the monument and the complete list of names.
Jim Clegg is wearing a light blue tee-shirt and a dark brown cap in the photos and Jim Zoia is wearing a white and jade grean shirt. Jim Zoia's grandfather Anthony Zoia installed the Civil War Statue in 1909 and his son Tony helped with this project as well but does not appear in this series. He is in ID 418 Time Capsule Search.
The most poignant photo is 419-7 which shows Jim Clegg sitting on a park bench in a pensive mood. He acknowledged in a newspaper article that he was overwhelmed when he realized that his three-year $38,000 had come to fruition.</text>
