The address is listed in the 1948 directory but not in the 1950 directory so the house was probably demolished at that time. Ironically, they are passing the sign on the tracks that reads "No Thoroughfare Keep Off." The postcard was printed by Wm G Hoffman of Chicago as part of a Woodstock series. It is numbered 719. The photo seems to have been taken earlier than No. 720 Birds Eye View since the trees and plantings are shorter. The photo could have been taken any time between 1906, when the factory buildings on the right were constructed, and 1914 (the postmark date written on the back of a similar Jim Keefe postcard). Jackson St. view of the building. This is to highlight the new addition that was completed in 1906. The trees must have been protected during construction since they obsure the view of most of the front details. One of the men is Antonio Zoia who erected the statue that had been carved of Barre and dark Quincy marble in Vermont. The statue was dedicated November 9, 1909. Zoia Monument Company is still in business in Woodstock today. Two versions of this postcard are included in the Jim Keefe collection. The first, and original, version is by E. C. Kropp of Milwaukee who took the photo and produced a colorized postcard. The second postcard has A.S. Wright Pub. in place of EC Kropp. It has a color wash rather than being full-color. Copyright laws were not always followed at the time, but perhaps Wright did work with Kropp rather than "pirate" the card. When it was erected, everyone called it the Soldier's Monument. It has other names: Civil War Statue and The Sentinel due to the fact that the Woodstock Sentinel newspaper used a drawing of it as their masthead. Title A name given to the resource Soldier's Monument and Band Stand in the Woodstock, IL Square Park (Colorized Postcard 723) Description An account of the resource The monument to Civil War soldiers was dedicated November 9, 1909. The Women's Relief Corps, founded in 1883 as an auxilliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, raised the $3,000 needed for the statue. It took the women 12 years to accumulate the funds. They gave "dime" socials and ten-cent teas, they operated an "eating house" at the fair grounds, they sponsored a ball and a lecture series. When they had collected half the amount needed, they passed the hat among the citizens of Woodstock who responded with pledges of $100 or less, depending upon their means. Antonio Zoia got the contract for the monument, which was carved of Barre and dark Quincy marble by a firm in Vermont. Several locations were considered: in a cemetery, then in one of the four corners of the park, and finally in the center of the Square where an ornamental fountain had been previously. Zoia erected the pedestal surmounted by a soldier standing at rest. 3,000 people attended the unveiling including 800 Woodstock school children, civil war veterans and their families, and military dignitaries. The band stand was also erected in 1909. Wm. G. Hoffman was in business producing postcards from 1908 until 1924. Title A name given to the resource City Square Park, Woodstock, IL - Panorama Description An account of the resource This panorama postcard is slightly larger than two standard postcards and designed to be folded in half and mailed. The photo was taken from Johnson Street and shows the sweep of the park from Cass Street to Van Buren. The buildings include 100 Cass, all of Benton Street, the City Hall (Opera House), and two smaller buildings. The Spring House can be seen inside the park as well as the metal fountain in the center where the Soldier Monument now stands. The panorama sky has a pinkish and blue wash, the trees and grass are a deep green, and the only building with any color is the red brown on the blacksmith's shop next to City Hall. Comparing this panorama with the postcard "Park Scene, Woodstock, Ill." that has no information on the back other than "printed in Germany", we discover a bit of photo piracy--the two photos are identical. The real publisher is E. C. Kropp of Milwaukee, who started in business in 1907. The postcard can be dated between then and 1910 (the postmark of the pirated card.) Kropp remained in business until 1956. People are sitting on nearly every bench while a child is playing on the grass near the foreground. This colorized post card can be dated between 1907 (the back of the postcard is divided to make room for a message as well as the address) and 1910 (the postmark). The back lists no publisher. It is marked "Made in Germany" and production number is 190676. However, it is the exact photo used in the City Park, Woodstock, Ill. Panorama, so it has been pirated from the E. C. Kropp company of Milwaukee. He was prominent in the "Linen Period" in production style from 1930 to 1945. The post card has a textured look and is framed in white to reduce the amount of ink necessary to print the cards. As in many postcards of the Square park, trees dominate the scene. The focal point is the bandstand, which was built in 1909 (not the current version of the bandstand.) Pearson-Ullberg Description An account of the resource This photo shows the City Hall/Opera House with very few details to indicate when it was taken. Since the Pearson-Ullberg company was founded in 1906, it is fair to estimate that it was taken in 1906 or 1907. The company stayed in business until 1911. The format of the postcard, which has the space below the photo for messages, indicates that it might have been produced before 1907, when the postal service permitted messages to be written on the back along with the address. However, the back of the postcard is divided with space for both message and address, so it was printed no earlier than 1907. The original photo was taken about 1912, when the lights around the Square were installed with several glass globes on the single light pole. In this photo, an older light pole has not yet been removed. The Birds Eye View shows the City Hall/Opera House, the new Central School built in 1906, and the old Public School, built in 1867. Since this school burned in 1919, this photo is dated between 1912 and 1919. Notice that there is no Johnson Street between Van Buren and Calhoun Street. Childs, this "real photo" postcard includes a broad view of the buildings on Van Buren Street. The A. S. Wright drug store and the Bunker Brothers building signs are clear and easy to decipher. Two clues make it possible to date the card as 1906 or 1907. First, the back of the postcard includes "The address to be written on this side." The postal service did not permit any messages to be written on the back until 1907. The message on the front reads, "Best regard S.C.P." The postmark on the back of this card is 1907. Second, D. F. Title A name given to the resource Oliver Typewriter Factory 711 ca. 1906 Description An account of the resource This postcard shows the 1906 addition to the Oliver Typewriter factory. It may have been taken later, but the trees are not tall. Three years after the 1903 expansion, this addition added 103' x 80' to the front and east with a gangway connecting the two buildings and space for a toilet room. The enameling room was expanded as was the polishing room. A separate company manufactured the covers for the typewriters in a new space provided for them. In all, it nearly doubled the size of the factory. The photo shows the proximity of the factory to the railroad tracks and is far enough away to show a portion of the west side. The back of the postcard identifies the publisher as the American 5 and 10 cent Stores Co. Woodstock, Ill. It was postmarked 1914. Stratton This color postcard was produced between 1902, when the separate office and gateway was built in front of the original factory building, and 1906, when a large addition was erected on the eastern side of the factory. The photo is clear enough to see the 250' long and 80' wide addition put on the original building in 1903. There were 515 employees when this was under construction, many of them looking for housing. The expansion was adequate enough for only a few years. Newspaper stories in 1905 highlighted the 3000 machine backlog and noted that they were making 102 machines every 10 hours. The photographer took this photo at nearly the same angle as the Oliver Typewriter Factory in Winter 1905 photo. There is no information about either the photographer or the postcard series. Jewett, at that time a partner in an Abstract business and partner at the State Bank of Woodstock. Previously, he had been in the boot & shoe business, the stock business (not selling stock, but rather shipping horses to South Dakota), tax collector, city treasurer, alderman, and a member of the Board of Education. After this date, He was Mayor from 1897-1903, County Treasurer, Dorr Township Supervisor and then the President of the State Bank until his death in 1931 at the age of 77. In his spare time, he was an active member of the Drama Club, organized in 1874, whose first play “The Drunkard” was “received by a crowded house with wild enthusiasm and hearty cheers.” This postcard is the work of C. R. Childs. He was among the most popular and prolific postcard producers in the Chicago area. He started his photography business in 1900 and was one of the first to see the benefit of the new technology. By 1906, he was sending photographers on interurban trains all over the area and he remained in business until the 1950s. The postcard craze was at its height between 1095 and 1915. The date estimate for the postcard is based on the beginning date that Childs was active, 1905, and the date for another card in this series "McHenry Co Courthouse and Sheriff's Residence 6201" that has dirt streets on the Square, so was taken before 1912. Jackson Always Inn Postcard Description An account of the resource This postcard, published circa 1910, shows the Cyrus Durfee House, 401 W. Jackson, during the years it was a hotel. Cyrus Durfee built his "mansion" in 1867. The Woodstock Sentinel extolled it as "One of the largest, most convenient, and best arranged residences in the county...lately furnished and occupied. It is located on the south side of Jackson street, on as fine a building spot as the town affords. The main building is thirty-six feet square and two stories high. On the south side is a wing, eighteen by thirty-six feet, also two-stories high, adjoining which is a wood house, eighteen by twenty-four feet. The cellar under the main building contains a cistern, ice room and a large refrigerator. In the building are fifteen rooms, exclusive of closets, all large and well lighted. On the first floor is a bath room, fitted up in the most convenient manner. Communication between the refrigerator in the cellar and the pantry above is made by means of a dumb waiter. Forty feet above ground, on the building, is an observatory, which gives a fine view of the town and surroundings. ...The plans and design were furnished by Mr. Van Osdell, architect, of Chicago...The cost of the building is not less than $7,000." Cyrus Durfee was a physician who practiced in Woodstock until 1874, then his name appears in the Chicago business directories until his death in 1901. The house became the Always Inn sometime between 1903, When Thomas and Gertrude Shackell were married, and when this postcard was printed. The hotel was first known as Always Inn, but the name was listed as Hotel Hillcrest in the 1914 city directory. The Shackell’s ran the hotel until their deaths in 1950. He died on February 28 and she died March 13. It was still a hotel in 1960 (called The Crest), but was vacant for most of the 1960s. The house was divided into apartments around 1968. Seminary Emerson Typewriter Co. was founded in Momence, Illinois in 1909 and moved to Woodstock in 1910. City subscribers raised $30,000 to purchase the land and build this 25,000 square foot building. Alvah Roebuck (of Sears and Roebuck Dept. Store) became a partner and the company was renamed Roebuck Typewriter Co. for a very short time. In 1913, the company was again renamed, this time to Woodstock Typewriter and was headed by Alvah Roebuck. The Woodstock Typewriter differed from the Oliver Typewriter in that it had a universal standard keyboard with a single shift and the letters were fully visible. An electric typewriter was manufactured in 1925 but was discontined because of a lack of trained service persons in the field. They tried again in 1949 and again discontinued the product for the same reason in 1957. Alger Hiss was convicted of lying to the House Unamerican Committee about his connection to the American Communist Party because of the unique letter A on a typewritten note--he was using a Woodstock Typewriter. Century America bought the company in 1949 but kept the Woodstock Typewriter name. In 1950, R.C. Allen Business Machines bought the factory and changed the name. R. C. Allen ended typewriter production in 1971 after producing an estimated 1 million typewriters. Woodstock Wireworks (known locally as the lampshade factory) took over the building in 1972. A copy of this postcard for sale on Ebay was postmarked 1908. The South St. tunnel (culvert/viaduct) is a helicoidal or spiral stone arch. One part was completed in 1867 and the other (over the other train track) was finished in 1897. Allen Stebbins, Chair of the Woodstock Historic Preservation Commission, provided this insight to the tunnel (or "Culvert"): "The South St. Culvert as it has been called was built in two sections. The first in 1867 when the Chicago & Northwestern built a single rail line out this way and the second section 30 years later in 1897 when they expanded to a second line. That's why the two dates on the keystones. I've started collecting some historic records on this bridge. "What's unusual is both sections were built in what's known as a helicoidal or spiral arch method. These arches are extremely rare in the United States built when a road or railroad crossed another road or river at an angle and at an incline. It posed some real problems for the engineers who looked back to the ancient Romans for ideas to solve the problem and rediscovered the spiral arch! Basically all the engineering up front needed to be pretty precise and once designed the stonemasons cut all the stones exactly the same dimensions then laid them in the spiral arch (oftentimes without the need of any mortar.) These types of arches are extremely strong and durable as witnessed by some of the ancient Roman examples still standing. "In the United States there are only a few known examples–some in Pennsylvania and the Seventh Street Improvement Arches in Minneapolis. These are listed as landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places. It is possible to see the differences in construction between the western side (this view) built in 1867 and the eastern half built in 1897 by looking at the foundation inside the tunnel. Recently a McHenry friend was visiting Woodstock, not for the first time. She often drives "the back way" from the old Jewel to South Street. That's along Lake Street (not Avenue!) to the stop sign; then left and through the tunnel, and west on South Street (figure that one out). Last week she photographed both sides of the tunnel. It shows the Square park from the west entrance on Johnson St. with mature trees, a dark-red colorized Spring House (1873), the metal fountain in the center (1880), diagonal sidewalks (1885), Sherman Block (1893). It also shows only horses & buggies parked--by 1910 there were automobiles mixed in. The style and type face (both front and back) is similar to the South Street Culvert postcard ID168 which was produced by W. G. Hoffman Pub of Chicago but the quality of the photo is much poorer. This postcard was taken during the era of the "Woodstock Players" (Paul Newman, Betsy Palmer, Geraldine Page, Shelly Burman, Tom Bosley and Lois Nettleton.) The cupola is missing as is the portico. The sign in the brick says City Hall and Library. There is a neon "Theatre" sign over the left front door. The adjacent building has a tile façade and jeweled glass under a large plate glass window, but no signage. The A & P grocery store has no identification. Contemporary pictures show Super A&P Market in large lettering on the building. The Western United Gas and Electric (later Nicor) really did not have signage. Title A name given to the resource Oliver Typewriter Office 1911 Persson Description An account of the resource Taken in front of the Oliver Typewriter complex, a man stands between the railroad tracks in front of the main entrance on Newell street. The large electric sign was installed in 1911 and a large Printype Policeman was added to the sign in 1912. Local amateur photographer Guss Persson took photos and sold them as postcards between 1905 and 1916. This print is postcard size but has no printing on the back. The Oliver Typewriter Company took over the Tappan Steam Pump factory in 1896 and closed in 1928 when Alemite bought the factory.
