Benton, a barber shop and a harness shop. There was also a third business in the basement. Sometime between 1900 and 1902, Bernie Sherman moved his "Sherman's Sporting Resort," from the Primm Block to this location (the Furer Block). He sold sporting goods, guns, ammunition, bicycles, lawn mowers, cigars and tobacco. Plus he offered billiards and bowling--all in the basement. The first time cigars and tobacco are mentioned in his ad was in 1905. "Henry Schneider and M. G. Eckert, under the firm name of Schneider & Eckert, conduct tonsorial parlors in the Furer building, east side public square. Mr. Schneider has been in the business in this city for more than twenty-five years, being for several years located on the corner where B. S. Austin's store now is. Mr. Eckert learned his trade in Mr. Schneider's shop, and that gentleman took him into partnership several years ago. Roy Murphy is a learner in their shop. [Woodstock Sentinel 12-19-1901] Schneider & Eckert were still in business in the 1914 City Directory, so it is possible that they are in this photo. Title A name given to the resource 522 Dean Street Description An account of the resource Elijah Burbank built 517 Dean St. and 522 Dean Street in 1855. According to his great granddaughters Jennette Burbank and Dorothy Luedtke, this house (522) was occupied by the family and the one across the street (517) was for the farm hands. Elijah was born in New Hampshire in 1805 and was educated at New England Academy. He tried his hand at several occupations in the East: teaching, farming, hotel keeping, and pork packing. Emigrating first to Southern Illinois via the Ohio River, he brought his wife and seven children to Dorr Township by ox team in 1847. He built a log cabin on his 80 acre claim (he paid 25% interest to the bank for his loan) and remained there for five years. Learning the trade of stone mason and plasterer, he moved to Woodstock where he enjoyed a very successful trade. He attempted different architectural styles with his brick: Italianate at 517 and Greek Revival at 522. The brick pattern of decoration on 517 is called corbeling and is said to be a Burbank trademark. He built the Jacob Harder House 123 S. Hayward and also assisted in building the Presbyterian church at 215 S. Tryon. He died in 1885 at age 80 in Dallas, TX, where he was visiting his daughter, and was buried in Woodstock. Jennette Burbank, a direct descendent, lived in the house until 1982. Parlor photo has wallpaper, lighting, wicker rocker, Victorian décor lace curtains, unknown photo on wall. The photographer, Melvin G. Tripp was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Tripp. He was a capable and successful photographer for many years. Lived a quiet and retired life. Helpless, bed-fast, suffering, her face looked, with its frame of soft white hair and her blue eyes, so sei-enely happy. "I have just been thanking my heavenly father for allowing me to spend my last days here." Our visitor was following the matron as she made her rounds. "Most of our guests have accumulated a little and invested it in a small home where they expected to spend their last days. But that was lonely, and there was much they could not do for themselves, so they have turned over their home to us, and we are helping them to enjoy what time they have left." This Institution opened its doors for the care of tho aged in 1903. One of the founders who later became its superintendent and chief promoter was the late Rev. J. D. Kelsey. At first it was only possible to accommodate about ten guests, but was later remodeled to entertain fourteen. On the demise of Rev. Kelsey, Rev. C. E. Maxwell became the superintendent, and it was during his term of service that it was brought to its present standard, and enlarged to accommodate eighteen. During all these years the home has been filled to capacity, with many applicants on the waiting list. The purpose of the founders was to provide a comfortable, pleasant home for those who had no convenient place to live, yet had some means they could contribute, which when pooled with others would be ample to provide for them the rest of their life. A survey of the roster shows many names that some of our readers would remember. For during the history of the institution of the 97 who have found this home as a "Haven of Rest" during their last days, nearly 20 percent have been from Woodstock and nearby towns. At the present time one-fourth of the guests are from McHenry county. The Home opens its doors to any desiring a quiet, comfortable cheerful place to live. At present there is an aged minister, a physician, the widow of a Civil War Veteran, the widow of a minister, a nurse and others who have contributed their part in the communities from which they came. Statistics show that those who have come to the home have lived eight to twelve years longer than they had any prospect of living when they came. The home family is in charge of a registered nurse and three assistants. They are always pleased to have friends call and make the acquaintance of the guests. The present superintendent is Rev. N. W. Title A name given to the resource Aerial photo looking north from railroad tracks 1950 Description An account of the resource A companion to 'Aerial Photo of Square Looking South' that shows the Square, this photo has Washington Street on the bottom, the Chicago Northwestern Railroad tracks above that, the Autolite manufacturing plant with the city Power Plant to the left. The north-south streets are Wheeler, Clay, Madison and Seminary (now Route 47). Few of the buildings in this picture remain on the north side of Washington St. witht exception of the large white building at the intersection with Wheeler St. It was a funeral home and is now a dentist's office. Also remaining is the apartment building at the far eastern end. All of the Woodstock Die Casting (Eltra, Autolite etc.) buildings have been demolished. The original Clay Street School building is visible behind the current school. El Niagra (120 First St.) looks just about the same except in 1950 it was Tony's Lunchroom and Skow Grocery. Kristensen's Service Station was at 135 Washington (now belongs to St Mary Parish). According to the 1950 City Directory, the Dairy Queen is already there, so this photo may pre-date 1950. Title A name given to the resource Algonquin Hill Climb Persson 1909 Description An account of the resource Gus Persson often identified the photos by writing on the negative. This is lebeled Algonquin, Hill, Climb Aug. 5-09. At that time Gus worked at Oliver Typewriter and chronicled the activities sponsored by the company. The photo is taken from a distance showing a cloud of dust in the road with men standing at the edge watching the car go past. Most of the spectators are further away from the photographer, indicating what might be the finish line. The steep hill provided a challenge to early automobiles and this hill is one of the few in McHenry County. It was a popular pastime during that era. The exact location of the photo is unknown but the hill is now Route 31 north of the intersection of Highway 62/Algonquin Road. Reliable sources of information only say, “Nothing official.’’ According to reports received from various sources this afternoon the great world war came to an end today. At noon German armistice envoys had entered the French lines under a flag of truce and had accepted all of the terms laid down by Marshal Foch, the chief representative of the Allies. The four German delegates, two representing the army and two the navy, crossed the German border, passing along a road designated by Marshal Foch in wireless instructions to the German command. Information as to the details of this most happy ending of the stupendous conflict which has rocked the world for four years past has been slow in coming through. In fact, the authenticity of the entire report has been difficult to establish. The wires were burning up with the glad tidings that Germany had accepted terms of the Allies for an armistice, shortly after noon today. Although the messages seemed to come from a good source, people shook their heads in doubt, seemingly afraid that there was some mistake and fearing the terrible disappointment which would follow a demonstration or celebration of the big event which the whole world has hoped for, prayed for and a large proportion has fought for. After waiting a few minutes for more news their enthusiasm became boundless and as the time flew by, work ceased in the shops, the whistles were turned loose and the members of the hand ran for their instruments. The crowds kept gaining in number until the streets of Woodstock looked like State street in Chicago on an exceptionally busy day. Noise of every available kind could be heard, men, women and children yelling with all their might. Parades were organized and everyone seemed to have found an American flag somewhere. The pupils in the schools soon became unmanageable and were told to put away their books and join in the celebration. The Sentinel was just making everything ready to go to press when the news came in, the forms were remodeled and not desiring to hold up the joyful report from the public longer than to be sure of its authenticity, we are giving but a brief account of the doings in old Woodstock on this glorious gala day. Quickly donning street clothes, not even stopping to think of breakfast, they made their way to the down­town district to join in celebrating the great dawn of peace. Grabbing anything that would make a noise, they started the grand march through the streets of the city. Like the pro­verbial snowball, every move meant an addition to the ranks and by the time daylight broke through the east­ern horizon a small army was gather­ed together. Austin began his grocery in 1881 then moved into this new Kendall Block in 1883. He remained in the grocery business here until his death in 1916 when his son took over the business. He stands to the left of his door while his son Garry Austin holds the door handle. The gentleman with the basket of bread is Frank W. Doton who had a baker's shop on Benton street. One of the other two men is identified Wm (Billy) Oliver or Woliver on the back of the photo. In 1885, Austin installed a new awning. Train cars are stopped on the tracks crossing Church Street. Looking north along Main Street, C. Beardsley and Son Livery sign is visible. There is a good view of the pre-1912 railroad depot. The telephone pole shows that the photo was taken after 1883. There are four brick buildings on the east side of Main Street, so the photo was taken after the fire of January,1892 This photo was used in both Woodstock Illustrated (1895) and Headlight: Sights and Scenes Along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad (1898) advertising Woodstock. 112 Cass see also Photo ID 53 Kendall Block Nancy Baker's notes: The 24’ by 65’ Kendall Block was completed in December of 1883. Dr. C.N. Kendall had his dentist’s office and living quarters on the second floor. Beneath Kendall’s office, on the first floor, was the B.S. Austin grocery store—a fixture at this corner for 30 years. Austin was assisted by his son and several other clerks and they delivered groceries throughout the City. Bart Austin was locally famous for his annual fireworks display on July 4th. The tradition began in 1881 and was still being reported in 1897. Posters on the front of the building say "Gollimar Bros. Shows Monday May 20." May 20 was on Monday in 1901 (too early for the cars), 1907, 1912, and 1918. Checking the 1907 Sentinel, the article says that both performances of the Gollimar Circus were well attended. This could be a meeting of the Automobile Club that was organized in 1904 or possibly an advertisement for the Buicks. In addition to the McCormick Harvesting Machines sign that can be seen in the Automobile Club 1910 photos (IDs 80 & 81) there is a Deere Corn Planters sign on the awning and a small sign "Auto (Protection?) League between the main floor windows. 217 Main Street: Schuett and Schaff Dealers in Farm Machinery, Carriages, Gasoline Engines This was the site of the J. D. Donovan farm implement business. He sold the business in 1902 to Schuett and Schaff due to ill health. The new owners continued with the farm implements (note the McCormick Harvesting Machines sign on the front of the awning) and added Buick to the line up. In 1908, C. E. Beardsley had taken over the business, calling it Beardsley & Son Auto Livery, but did not change the faded sign. Title A name given to the resource Bandstand and North side of Square ca. 1909 Description An account of the resource This bandstand, built in 1909, replaced the earlier wood frame platform that had been built in 1885/86 at the time the Spring City Band formed. It is built on a raised concrete platform with field rock foundation and pillars. This is not the current bandstand but the pillars at the entrances to the park are still the same style with the field stone. The bandstand has electric lights on the edge of the roof and criss crossing the ceiling. The photo was taken before 1912 when globe type light fixtures were on metal poles on the edges of the park. Buildings on Cass street and Main street are visible. 106 Cass: D. Moan Board of Trade. The Board of Trade was started by Gustav Behrens in 1900 and the 1912 Sanborn map shows that it was still a saloon. So far, no information is available on D. Moan. 108 Cass: Henry Stone and Son boot and shoe store. This is the old frame building that, after escaping the fire on Main Street in 1892, burned in 1936 and was replaced by a single story tile building. The doctor was born in Chicago in 1875, operated under Dr. Kendall and Dr. Colby for a number of years, attended the Northwestern University, and is a graduate of the dental department, class of '97. He was interested in the practice of his profession at West McHenry after his graduation, before coming to Woodstock. His parlors are nicely arranged, conveniently located and all work is guaranteed. Judd corner, a large "Dora's Children's Shop" sign has an arrow pointing down E. Judd. Van Buren. From 1872 to 1885 the store was located at 107 E. Van Buren. After 1885 the store moved to 104 N. Benton (east side of Square). The back of the stereoptican reads: E.W. Blossom, dealer in Fine Watches, Rich Jewelry, Silver and Plated Wares, Clocks, fancy goods, wall pockets, brackets, toys, pocket books, musical instruments, walking sticks, chromos, gold, silver & steel spectacles. Watches, clocks and jewelry repaired and warranted. Fancy and ornamental engraving. All goods sold engraved free of charge. Remember I will not be undersold.
