Title A name given to the resource Borden's Condensed Milk Plant on Washington Street, 1908 Description An account of the resource In 1903, the Borden's Condensed Milk company sent a delegation which included representatives of the Chicago and North Western railway to search for a suitable site to build a factory in Woodstock. After consulting with prominent citizens, Mayor E. C. Jewett and other alderman, the company purchased 10 acres on Chemung Road (now Washington St.). The company got permission of a nearby landowner, J. J. Murphy, for drainage to go through one of his farms. The land was located adjacent to the railroad tracks at 700 Washington St. near the current Elm Lane. The factory was completed in 1904. This photo was taken in 1908 according to a file at the McHenry County Historical Society. Milk was processed here until the building burned down about 1920. Borden's then purchased the A. J. Olson plant at E. Portions of other frame buildings between Calhoun and the Square can be seen. They were demolished to provide room for the A & P Grocery Store (128 Cass), probably in 1937. A small portion of the adjacent building is visible that is a more typical business building. A woman left her car running while she went to make a deposit at the State Bank (101 S. Benton). When she returned to the car, she heard it drop into gear. It jumped the curb and demolished a parking meter before crashing into the window. The driver was cited by the police for leaving a vehicle running while unoccupied. The globe type electric lamps were installed in 1912. In 1916, according to the Historic Walking Tour brochure, A. D. Osborne installed the deep style of windows which appear in the picture. Businesses visible include J. Rait Clothing Company, A. D. Osborne, and the Pleasure Club on the upper floors. J. Rait does not appear in either the 1914 nor 1916 city directories. The clothing styles are pre-World War I. The photographer is unknown. This store over the many years built up an enviable record in the dispensing of Drugs and Medicines, filling of Prescriptions and in the sale of those articles for personal use ordinarily sold in a Drug Store. It was in this store, then conducted by Mr. L. T. Hoy and under the management of Mr. Frank A. Daniels, that Raymond P. Pfeiffer, in 1911, began his apprenticeship as a Pharmacist. During the years 1913 and 1914 he attended the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy, after which he returned to the Hoy Drug Store to continue his employment. In 1919 Mr. Pfeiffer bought a half interest in the store, which was then known as The Hoy Pharmacy and in 1928 he acquired ownership of the store by the purchase from Mr. Hoy of the remaining half of this business, with its splendid record of service and since that time the store has been known as the Pfeiffer Pharmacy. This store has continued to go forward with a vision of continued and increased service to the people of this community. With the installation of Soda Fountain and Sandwich service in 1928, a complete modernization of the store interior followed and as always in the past, the aim of this store is to meet every worthwhile advance in the line of up-to-date merchandising which will rebound to the benefit of its patrons. Title A name given to the resource Cass Street from Courthouse Roof 1902-04 Description An account of the resource This view from the Courthouse roof shows much of Cass Street and part of Main Street. There are two frame buildingson the square. The one on the far left was a boarding house that was torn down in 1928, along with the Diesel & Reichmuth Furniture and Undertaking building next to it, to make room for the F. W. Woolworth store. The one at the intersection of Cass & Main shows a gabled roof, rather than the storefront façade (which shows up in the 1905 Sanborn map). The most easily identifiable buildings in the background are the Buell & Olmstead Flour and Grain building (upper far left), the fancy design of the Waverly House Hotel at 212 Main street, and the Dacy Lumber storage building that was originally the first church on Jefferson st. 124 Cass: Diesel & Reichmuth Furniture and Undertaking. Rudolph Diesel came from Germany in 1848, locating in Watertown NY for several years, then moving to southern Kentucky, before moving to Woodstock in 1860 where he conducted a business selling and manufacturing furniture and coffins, and providing undertaking services at 122 Cass for many years. The store’s large awning advertising furniture and undertaking appears in many old Woodstock photos. Diesel advertised that he also sold sewing machines. In 1928, the Diesel building was demolished, along with the old clapboard sided boarding house with the white picket fence located to the west, to build a new F.W. Woolworth Company store. During the excavation, the skeleton of a baby was reported discovered, but the mystery remained unsolved. The F. W. Woolworth store was constructed by local building contractor Henry Ohlrich. The building had an ornamental terra cotta façade and the trademark F.W. Woolworth Co. gold lettering. The western third of building was occupied by the A& P Tea Co. in 1930’s and by True Value Hardware in the 1940’s and early 50’s. The terra cotta was removed and replaced with brick in the 1970’s. 120 Cass: A. B. Pratt constructed the Pratt Meat Market building in 1899 on the site of the old McManus building. The front section of the McManus building had been moved down the hill from in front of 130 Cass Street when Cass Street was extended through to Throop Street. At the time of demolition, it was known as the A.B. Pratt & Son Meat Market. Prior to that it had been run as the Bradley and Bradley Meat Market and the Cash Meat Market. In the early 1920’s, John Asmus and his son Charlie were full time butchers for Reid Pratt. City directories list the building as the Asmus Meat Market in the 1930’s and 40’s (the Asmus Market later moved to 126 N. Benton) and the R.W. Schultz Meat Market in the 1950’s.[Nancy Baker] 118 Cass became the First Savings and Loan Association of Woodstock in the early 1960’s. The façade of 118 and 120 Cass were altered as the savings and loan expanded. Soto's Shoe Shineing (sic) Parlor on Sunday, January 6, 1918.Two others stand on the sidewalks behind him. The message on the back of the postcard says "Dated Sunday, Jan 6-1919. Woodstock. I was the one that got to work." It is unsigned, but perhaps refers to the photographer (donor Dorothy Burbank Luedtke's uncle Melvin Tripp) or the man with the shovel. This brick church was built in 1856 for $4,000. It was remodeled and improved in 1881, when the seating was increased from 200 to 400. It was demolished in March 1916 to make space for the current grade school. The parish house was built when Rev. Michael S. Gilmartin was pastor from 1905-1908. Their coach, Dave Crawford, was new that year, taking over for Ernest E. Hanson who left to become superintendent of schools at Lake Bluff. Dave Crawford, who was also principal of Central Junior High, had been at Woodstock High School for five years. Seminary Ave The Woodstock Children's Home was started in Chicago in1886 by the Rev. Thomas Brayton Arnold and his wife Teressa Richardson Arnold . It was incorporated in 1888 as the Chicago Industrial Home for Children. In 1897, the children's home was relocated to a farm on the north side of town in Woodstock, as a result of a donation by local resident Roxy D. Stevens. The name Chicago Industrial Home remained until sometime between 1946 & 1948 when it became Woodstock Children's Home. It was administered by the Free Methodist Church. This postcard was taken between 1909 (start of Wm G. Hoffman company) and 1910 (postmark). The card is numbered 709. In 1912, a large addition was erected. The Children's Home also included a second large home, Harrison House (formerly Grace Hall of Todd School) purchased in 1956. The operation closed in 1975. This building was demolished in 1983 to make room for Sunset Manor--a.k.a. Title A name given to the resource Church Demolition Dacy Lumber 1 1962 Description An account of the resource First in a series covering the demolition of the first church built in Woodstock that was being used for storage by Dacy Lumber company. A National Tea Company grocery store was built on the site with 220 N. Jefferson as the address. The church was on the corner of Church & Jefferson Streets where the Challenger Learning Center is now located. The original front portico and door was removed so outside access was from the street level only. The steeple was also removed and the Dacy Lumber sign put on the steeple support. This photo shows most of the old house facing Jefferson that had been used as the lumber company office. It was demolished at the same time as the church. Childs, this "real photo" postcard includes a broad view of the buildings on Van Buren Street. The A. S. Wright drug store and the Bunker Brothers building signs are clear and easy to decipher. Two clues make it possible to date the card as 1906 or 1907. First, the back of the postcard includes "The address to be written on this side." The postal service did not permit any messages to be written on the back until 1907. The message on the front reads, "Best regard S.C.P." The postmark on the back of this card is 1907. Second, D. F. Title A name given to the resource City Square Park, Woodstock, IL - Panorama Description An account of the resource This panorama postcard is slightly larger than two standard postcards and designed to be folded in half and mailed. The photo was taken from Johnson Street and shows the sweep of the park from Cass Street to Van Buren. The buildings include 100 Cass, all of Benton Street, the City Hall (Opera House), and two smaller buildings. The Spring House can be seen inside the park as well as the metal fountain in the center where the Soldier Monument now stands. The panorama sky has a pinkish and blue wash, the trees and grass are a deep green, and the only building with any color is the red brown on the blacksmith's shop next to City Hall. Comparing this panorama with the postcard "Park Scene, Woodstock, Ill." that has no information on the back other than "printed in Germany", we discover a bit of photo piracy--the two photos are identical. The real publisher is E. C. Kropp of Milwaukee, who started in business in 1907. The postcard can be dated between then and 1910 (the postmark of the pirated card.) Kropp remained in business until 1956.
