<dcterms:title>Die Cast Site 1-6 1997</dcterms:title>
<dcterms:description>The Woodstock Die Cast site was surrounded by Clay, Newell, First and Wheeler Streets. The first factory building was constructed in 1894 for the Tappan & Wheeler Steam Pump Company. Woodstock had offered incentives for this company to relocate from Chicago. In 1898, the Oliver Typewriter Company, also from Chicago, took over the building. Oliver Typewriter Company produced typewriters sold all over the world. As the major employer of the area (1,400 employees), the company had a band, fire department, semi-pro baseball team and major social events such as a summer picnic in the Fox River Grove picnic grounds. The Oliver typewriter allowed the user to see the letters as they were typed, rather than raising the bar to read the copy. It went out of business when the double-shift was invented and it was deemed too costly to retool the factory. It stayed open a few years offering repair services.
1928 Alemite Die Casting & Manufacturing of Chicago produced aluminum cookware, parts for Hamilton Beach, Speed Queen, Whirlpool; electric trains and toys; and many other items. Their fireproof storage room held over 4, 000 different precision molds.
1935 Electric Auto-Lite made automobile parts and accessories, including door handles, grilles and hood ornaments for Ford Motor Company and Packard and others. It had over 2,000 employees in 1949.
1963 Woodstock Die Casting, (the name was bought from its parent company, Eltra Corporation) manufactured automotive, appliance and industrial fittings
1964 A five-year building and renovation project added 100,000 square feet to the complex
1979 Allied Chemical Corporation acquired Eltra.
1980 Allied merged with Signal Corporation and became Allied-Signal Corporation.
1985 Woodstock Manufacturing Corporation purchased the plant and named the company Woodstock Die Cast Corporation. Despite the name, the company was located in Southfield, Michigan.
1988 United Auto Workers Local 922 went on strike. The dispute over pay, pensions and safety issues lasted over two years.
1990 Woodstock Die Cast plant closed on June 29 with a loss of 757 jobs.
Jim Keefe took a series of photos in 1997, just before the buildings were demolished. They show both the buildings on the factory grounds and also the surrounding neighborhood. This ID has 5 photos. 5 more are included in ID 407.
These proof sheets are photos Jim Keefe took in 1972. There are additional color photos in the Keefe Slides in History Photos. The new Government Center was being built on N. Seminary. City Hall was going to move from the Opera House to the old Courthouse Annex at 121 W. Calhoun.
The Opera House needed repair and fundraising was about to start.
The old bandstand (without a roof) was demolished late that year to be replaced by a less than satisfactory kiosk out of a catalog.
Lake Avenue, South Street, Throop Street and Washington were still designated as Business Route 14, thus there was still a traffic light and Throop & Jackson.
S & H Green Stamps could be redeemed in the flat topped building on Throop & W. Judd.
Trees on the Square were still small after the devastating flood/wind storm of the 1968.
The proof sheet photos are named Proof Sheet 1 (2 or 3) with the description of the image in alphabetical order. Only a small selection are attached because the proofs are poor and the subjects often covered in better photos.
Before the names were installed around the base of the Civil War Soldier Monument in the Square a group of history buffs tried to locate the time capsule that had reputedly been put under the statue when it was installed in 1909. This series of photos (six photos are scanned with an additional six not scanned but stored behind these photos in the sleeves) document the search. In the first photo, the wooden frame has already been erected around the base of the statue for support and to outline the area where the granite stones with the names will be placed. In the second photo, Jim Clegg is facing the camera. In the third photo, three men examine the area under the statue, including Tony Zoia on the right. The fourth photo shows the bystanders: unknown, Al Wilson, city engineer, Eileen Millard, Woodstock Independent reporter, Jim Clegg's back, Tim Clifton, city manager, and an unknown newspaper photographer. The last photo shows the empty indentation where the time capsule (probably?) had been located but there is no way to really know.</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>Horses with wagons and buggies are parked on Johnson St in this dark colored photograph. The buildings on Benton St can be glimpsed through the trees with additional buggies and wagons parked on Benton St. The Spring House (built 1876) is visible, but the monument, built in 1909, is not. In its place is the metal fountain that was in the middle of the Square Park since the 1882.
The publisher is not identified on the card, but the style on the front (border and font) is identical to a William G. Hoffman postcard of the South Street Culvert. The back also has the same font and layout. The card is postmarked 1910.

Hoffman was in business in Chicago from 1908-1925.
