Oliver Typewriters 1896-1914

The 1896-1901 Oliver No. 1.5
This was the first model made at the Woodstock factory and the oldest of the City's collection. The 1.5 (also known as Oliver 2) introduced winged handles and a ribbon reverse switch locatd on the right side below the keyboard.

1898 Standard Visible Oliver No. 3
The Oliver No. 3 was available in olive green or a nickel-plated finish, which was popular in Latin American regions to help prevent rust. Margin release keys were introduced in this model.

The 1906-1907 Oliver No. 3
This Oliver Number 3 was an exported version of the model 2 designed for Latin American. The nickle-plated to prevent the machines from rusting and the machines also featured a black keyboard.
The 1907-1914 Standard Visible Writer No. 4
Oliver number 4 is an exported variant of the number 3 and it has four extra keys and was nickle plated. It was produced from 1904-1907.

1907-1914 Oliver No. 5
The Oliver No. 5 features a larger base and a ruling device that holds a standard pencil (an upgrade from earlier machines that accepted sticks of graphite). Another feature is a the introduction of the tabulator key (allows for rapid and consistent indentation of paragraphs).

The No. 5 had several variations throughout its production life. It also has a redesigned base compared to the No. 3 and some models include a ruling device that can hold a standard wooden pencil. This machine features a tabulator key as well.
Oliver No. 6 1907-1914
The Oliver No. 6 is the export version of the No. 5 with four additional keys. This example was sold in France.
Oliver No. 7 1914-1915
The No. 7 frame has changed from previous models. It is now exposed under the keyboard. The No. 7 is also a less common model, with only about 57,000 machines made between 1914 and 1915.

1914-1915 Oliver No. 8
The number 8 is incredibly rare to find and for a period of time, it was believe there was only one machine in existance. There are currently 4 known remaining Number 8 machines and this is the only machine with a wide carraige.

1915-1922 The No. 9 Oliver Standard Visible Writer
The No. 9 is the most common Oliver model, making up 43% of all standard Olivers produced. The machine's price soon dropped from $100 to $49 thanks to a new mail-order sales strategy. This specimen features an extra-wide carriage.

The No. 7 models of the Standard Visible Typewriter and the Standard Visible Writer are the exact same models, with one featuring a nickle plate addition. This small feature is considered an aesthetic choice as well as as well as a performance difference. The later edition of Oliver No. 7, "Standard Visible Writer" (left hand side), offered a nickel plate that helps with the wear and tear of the machine, while also providing rust resistance.
The No. 9 models "Oliver Standard Visible Writer" and "Standard Visible Typewriter" follow the same pattern of being exactly same models, with one having a special accesory. For the No. 9 models, that accesory is an extra wide carriage that serves as a stabilizer, provides storage or organizational space, and assists with making typing more efficent.
