May 29 1903 | For a New Courthouse

The public property committee of the board of supervisors is facing a contingency that is hard of settlement. There is a crying demand for more room in various offices in the court house, and the committee is debating whether it would be wiser to remodel the old building or put up a structure on the same site that will more nearly comport with our standing as one of the wealthiest and most progressive county in the state.
Recent events have demonstrated that the vaults in the present court house are far from being what would be termed absolutely fire and weather proof, and we understand some of the county officers who are obliged to care for the funds and records of the county have cleared their skirts in case of loss by notifying the board of the inadequacy of the present vaults for properly protecting the people's most important records.
Some of the members of the committee favor the erection of a modern court house on the present site, and the issuance of bonds to pay for the same, said bonds to be extended over a long peiod of time, so that the future generation shall have something to do with paying them. This could be done with very little additional taxation, or so little it would be scarcely felt, and it is a question with The Republican whether it would not be wisdom to adopt this course and thus provide McHenry county with a court house that would be a credit to this thrifty, progressive, and up-to-date people.
The subject will doubtless be agitated for soem time, and we would like to hear an expression of our brethren of the press concerning the matter. The need for additional and safer vault room is evident, and there is no better time than now to provide for it, as our aggregate of taxable wealth is rapidly increasing and the people would hardly realize that they were being taxed to erect a building for the safety and preservation of their own records.
